Work At Home New To Work From Home? Here’s Some Tips.

March 26, 2020

For some of us, working from home is nothing new. However, many are now experiencing it for the first time due to the coronavirus. Working from home has a lot of advantages, depending on your career. In the technology industry, we find it’s becoming more and more common. With the latest push to work from home, we suspect this trend to continue to grow, as companies who had not considered working from home are now being forced to give it a try.

We at innerActiv wanted to share a few tips about adjusting to working from home from our personal experiences and asked our staff to provide their most helpful tips:

Keep a Normal Schedule
It’s easy to fall into the trap of sleeping in later than normal since you do not have to commute to work. While it can be tempting, depending on your commute time, you will feel like you have gained more productive time just by keeping your normal wake up schedule.

Working from home provides more opportunities to walk outside during lunch or even squeeze in workouts earlier in the morning. With gyms being closed, if you have a treadmill, resistance bands or weights, it’s a great idea to get moving in the morning.

Get Dressed
Rather than being in PJs (however tempting), getting dressed is one of the small things you can do to set yourself up for productivity. It helps to put you get into the mindset of “going to work”.

Lunch Time
Prepare your lunch either in the morning or the evening before just as if you were going to the office. This will make taking an actual lunch break more likely to happen because you won’t have to spend extra time preparing. It’s too easy to skip lunch breaks when working from home.

Take Breaks
Block out at least one window of time a day to get away from your desk and your work. If possible, get outside. Without “water-cooler chats” and office neighbors, it’s easy to become tied to your desk. This helps prevent burn out in the long run

Most importantly, make sure you understand the best and most secure ways to reach your co-workers (chat, phone, email, etc). This will simplify your life by knowing what the communication plan is ahead of time and reduce stress when answers are needed quickly.

Here’s to enjoying working from home!
